Description
BK virus (BKV) is a ubiquitous polyoma virus (belonging to the family Papovaviridae) that is often acquired during early childhood. BKV is a small (~45 nm) icosahedral, non-enveloped double-stranded DNA virus composed of 5,000 base pairs. The primary BKV infection often occurs around ages 3-4 years old, after which it lies dormant in the genito-urinary tract and can become reactivated in certain immunocompromised disease states including renal transplant and HIV. A higher prevalence of BKV is seen among HIV positive patients with lower CD4 cell counts. The mechanism for BKV transmission is still unknown but is speculated to be fecal-oral, respiratory, and via organ transplant. PMID: 26293687 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
