Description
Spirometry is the most commonly used pulmonary function test (PFT). It is widely available in clinician's offices and emergency rooms and is used for screening as well as monitoring patients with various pulmonary diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Common measurements include forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). The FEV1 varies inversely and linearly with the degree of airflow obstruction in patients with asthma and COPD. Reversibility of obstruction, which is suggestive of asthma, is assessed by repeating spirometry measurements after administration of a bronchodilator.
