Description

Mycobacterium avium is a common environmental organism that causes significant cross reaction with Mycobacterium bovis and must, therefore, must have a control. A blood sample is stimulated with the specific antigen (Mycobacterium avium) and then the level of gamma interferon measured. Gamma interferon is a cytokine produced by T helper cells as part of the immune response to various stimuli. The level of gamma interferon produced provides a measure of sensitization of the cell mediated immune system to the specific stimulus. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
