Version 2.77

Description

Enterobacteriaceae are a large family of Gram-negative bacteria that include common disease-causing pathogens, such as Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Salmonella, Serratia, and Shigella. Several Enterobacteriaceae strains have become resistant to antibiotics, including carbapenem. Enzymes such as KPC (Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase) and NDM (New Delhi Metallo-beta-lactamase) break down carbapenems and make them ineffective. The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriaceae are making it difficult to treat serious nosocomial infections and leading to more species becoming resistant to available agents.
