Recoverin
Active
Description
Recoverin is a calcium-binding photoreceptor protein that has been identified as the target of autoantibodies that results in cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR). CAR is a paraneoplastic syndrome where autoantibodies against an unknown neoplasm cross-react with retinal photoreceptor antigens and damage them leading to vision loss. PMID: 7568096 Only 65% of patients with CAR have detectable antiretinal antibodies and antibodies specific to recoverin are found in approximately 10% of those patients. Most tumors associated with CAR include small-cell lung cancer and gynecological malignancies. Neoplasms that are less often associated with CAR include bladder, prostate, pancreatic, small bowel, thymus, thyroid and colon. PMID: 26862417 Recoverin antibodies lead to cancer-associated retinopathy and have been shown to induce apoptotic death to photoreceptor cells. PMID: 12417436 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
