Version 2.80

Description

The thymus is a small organ located behind the sternum and between the lungs. It is where lymphocytes develop into T cells and is believed to assist in protecting the body from autoimmune attack. The thymus is only active through puberty, after which it slowly shrinks throughout life until at age 75 has mostly been replaced by fat. (http://www.endocrineweb.com/endocrinology/overview-thymus) The medulla of the thymus is made up of epithelial cells specific to the thymus called Hassall's corpuscles (HC) though their function is unclear[http://saspublisher.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/SJAMS-21B147-148.pdf]
It has been found that the number of HC per unit area of thymic medulla tissue was found to be significantly higher in patients positive for myasthenia gravis (MG) than in patients negative for MG.[http://www.jni-journal.com/article/S0165-5728(14)00014-9/abstract] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
