Description
The influenza A and B virus genomes comprise eight segmented viral RNAs (vRNAs). Each RNA segment encodes 1 or 2 nonstructural proteins. Segmentation of the vRNAs allows viruses to exchange vRNAs with other strains. Although research has shown consistency of the packaging mechanism between viruses, it is more variable than previously thought which is relevant in understanding how infectious and noninfectious virions coordinate to produce infection.
