Description
Ocular melanoma is a rare cancer of the pigment cells in the eye. The most common ocular melanoma of adults is uveal melanoma. The uvea is the middle layer of the eye between the sclera and the retina. Uveal melanoma can be difficult to treat due to the lack of early signs or symptoms of disease. (https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/ocular-melanoma-diagnosis) The incidence of uveal melanoma in the adult Caucasian population is about 0.7 cases per 100,000 per year. Due to the lack of early signs and symptoms and consequent delay in treatment, metastatic disease is common and occurs in up to half of all patients. In one study of patients with uveal melanoma, 62% of the melanoma specimens were positive for chromosome 3 monosomy (monosomy 3), and the finding of monosomy 3 was correlated with both the likelihood of metastatic disease as well as decreased survival. The underlying reason for the association between chromosome 3 monosomy and metastases is not yet understood. PMID: 18234992 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
