Porcine circovirus type 1
Active
Description
Porcine circoviruses (PCV) are small nonenveloped DNA viruses containing a single-stranded circular genome. The viral capsid is icosahedral and approximately 17 nm in diameter. PCV is a member of the virus family Circoviridae and are the smallest viruses replicating autonomously in eukaryotic cells utilizing the host polymerase for genome amplification. Two types of PCV have been characterised, PCV1 and PCV2. PCV1 is typically nonpathogenic in adult pigs, and PCV2 is associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PMID: 21945213 Experimental infection of swine fetuses with PCV1 has been shown to cause hemorrhagic lung lesions. PMID: 22018436 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
