Version 2.78

Description

The mecA gene and its homologue, mecC, are found in bacterial cells and enable bacteria to be resistant to antibiotics such as penicillin, oxacillin and other penicillin-like antibiotics. These genes are carried on a mobile genetic element called the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), which integrates at an open reading frame (orfX) in the bacterial genome. The most commonly known carrier of the mecA gene is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The prevalence of mecC MRSA is currently low but varies geographically where in some regions its presence is increasing. PMID: 24331435 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
