Bone ash [common formula: Ca5(OH)(PO4)3] typically consists of calcium, phosphorus, and a small amount of water (~2%). Bone ash is measured to determine the effects of various feeds on the growth of livestock animals and detect osteopenic disease. PMID: 11108452 There are different methods used and variations in procedure when estimating bone ash. Bones may be autoclaved or boiled/extracted and cleaned, dried, and ashed differently.
