Description

Escherichia coli (EC) is a gram-negative, flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium. [https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/colibacillosis] There are six classes of EC that cause diarrhea, one of which is the diffusely adhering E. coli (DAEC) class. Within the DAEC class is a class of strains of EC that expresses an adhesin involved in diffuse adherence (AIDA-I) which is encoded by the aidA-I gene. The AIDA-I protein is a multifunctional autotransporter protein that regulates the aggregation of bacteria and formation of biofilm. PMID: 17933890

Veterinary Medicine:
The Strains of EC that possess the aidA-I gene can infect swine and cause edema disease and postweaning diarrhea (PWD), both of which have significant negative economic impacts on farms across the world. PMID: 17933890 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
