Norquetiapine
Active
Description
Norquetiapine is the primary active metabolite of the parent drug quetiapine and is used to treat bipolar depression, major depressive episodes, and generalized anxiety disorder. Norquetiapine, unlike quetiapine but similar to some other antidepressants, prevents the reuptake of norepinephrine (NE) at the noradrenaline transporter (NET). The NET is a protein on the surface of noradrenergic neurons that controls the activity of NE by transporting it into the cytoplasm of the noradrenergic neurons. Norquetiapine partially activates the 5-HT1A receptors which, with the NET, is thought to have antidepressant responses in the patient. Quetiapine and norquetiapine act together against several target receptors, including NET, 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2, to treat antidepressant and anxiolytic symptoms of patients.
