Zopiclone-N-oxide
Active
Description
Zopiclone-N-oxide is one of two metabolites of eszopiclone and is not pharmacologically active.[http://www.who.int/medicines/areas/quality_safety/4.6ZopicloneCritReview.pdf] Eszopiclone is a cyclopyrrolones and a benzodiazepine receptor agonist derived from pyridine, pyrazine and piperazine and used to treat insomnia. Its mechanism of action is to bind to the omega-1 subtype of the alpha subunit of gamma-aminobutyrate-benzodiazepine GABA receptor complex (GABA-A). GABA-A is a chloride ionophore in the central nervous system, that when bound causes the chloride channels to open, leading to hyperpolarization, inhibition of neuronal firing, and an increase in the inhibition of GABA. This sequence of events causes an hypnotic response in the patient and induces sleep. Eszopiclone has insignificant anxiolytic activity and shows no evidence of causing increased liver enzymes in the blood.[CID 969472] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
