Bacterial 23S rRNA gene azithromycin resistance mutation
Active
Description
Bacterial resistance to macrolide drugs has increased in conjunction with their heavy use in both medicine and animal husbandry. While there are a number of mechanisms bacteria use to resist the efficacy of drug treatment, the one used by macrolides is to bind to the large 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and interfere with protein synthesis. Changes of specific nucleotides in the 23S rRNA inside the large ribosomal unit are the root cause of many instances of bacterial resistance to macrolides. PMID: 11120937 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
