Descriptions
A bacillus is a rod-shaped bacterium. The term can also refer to the genus of bacteria known as Bacillus.[https://study.com/academy/lesson/bacterial-cell-morphology-and-classification-definition-shapes-arrangements.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
The gram stain is used to differentiate bacteria based on the amount of peptidoglycan in their cell walls. Bacteria with a high concentration of peptidoglycan will stain purple with the gram stain and are called gram positive. Gram negative bacteria have a low concentration of peptidoglycan in their cell walls and stain red with the gram stain. Some genera of gram negative bacteria include Escherichia, Bordetella, Campylobacter, Legionella, Neisseria, and Pseudomonas. Many species of these and other gram negative bacteria are pathogenic such as Escherichia coli that causes foodborne illnesses and Vibrio cholera that causes waterborne illnesses.[http://www.highveld.com/microbiology/gram-negative-bacteria.html][https://www.niaid.nih.gov/research/gram-negative-bacteria] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
