Gram positive non-catalase producing cocci identified
Active
Description
Catalase is an enzyme that causes oxygen to be released from hydrogen peroxide. That reaction is used to differentiate between bacteria that produce catalase such as staphylococci from bacteria that do not produce catalase such as streptococci. A 3% concentration of peroxide is used for aerobic cultures and a 15% concentration is used for anaerobic cultures. The production of catalase by bacteria is a protective mechanism against the deadly effect of hydrogen peroxide that accumulates during aerobic carbohydrate metabolism.[https://microbiologyinfo.com/catalase-test-principle-uses-procedure-result-interpretation-with-precautions/] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
