Description

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular, pleomorphic bacillus and is the bacterium that causes Q fever. Its only known targets are monocytes and macrophages. C burnetii infection in humans is typically asymptomatic, but in acute disease can exhibit symptoms of a self-limited flu-like illness, pneumonia or hepatitis. Symptoms of chronic C burnetii infection include primarily endocarditis, but also hepatitis and chronic fatigue syndrome. Pregnant women infected with C burnetii may experience abortions, premature deliveries, and stillbirth. Ticks are the reservoir and vector for C burnetii, and cattle, sheep, and goats are the primary sources of infection in humans. C burnetii is transmitted in infected secretions, and people with predisposing factors such as underlying disease and compromised cell-mediated immunity are at a greater risk of symptomatic infection. PMID: 16481501 The shikimate dehydrogenase gene (aroE) is a housekeeping gene of C burnetti that is targeted in nucleic acid amplification assays to aid in the diagnose C burnetii infection.
