Description
Rotational thromboelastography, also called thromboelastometry or ROTEM, is similar to traditional thromboelastography (TEG) in that it is used to measure the viscoelastic properties of a clot. In TEG, whole blood is added to a cup in which a pin is suspended, the cup is rotated, and as the clot forms, the rotational force is transferred to the pin. The movement of the pin is transformed into a tracing, from which the clotting parameters are derived. In ROTEM, the cup is stationary and the pin rotates, and as the clot forms, the rotation of the pin slows down. The torsion of the pin is transformed into a tracing from which the ROTEM parameters are derived. PMID: 22726088 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
