Neisseria sp
Active
Description
Neisseria species are gram-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci belonging to the Neisseriaceae family. They are all oxidase positive, and except for N elongate subspecies nitroreducens and N elongate subspecies elongate, they are all catalase positive. Neisseria sp growth is encouraged in CO2-enhanced, humid environments. Most of the Neisseria sp are normal flora of the upper respiratory tract and oropharynx. Neisseria sp are transmitted by nasal and throat secretions. The only pathogenic species of Neisseria are N gonorrhoeae and N meningitides. Normally non-pathogenic Neisseria species can become critical infections in immunocompromised patients. Humans, dogs, guinea pigs, rhesus monkeys, cows, and iguanid lizards serve as reservoirs for Neisseria sp.[https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/laboratory-biosafety-biosecurity/pathogen-safety-data-sheets-risk-assessment/neisseria.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
