Bet v 1 from a family of proteins related to plant defense is related to similar compounds from many fruits (apple, cherry apricot etc.) as well as celery and carrots. In patients with birch allergies this antigen may the root cause of allergies from many foods. Recombinant Bet V 1 (rBet V1) is used for birch allergy testing and is being used in trials of desensitization. Source: Regenstrief Institute

The major allergen of birch tree pollen is Bet v 1. Recombinant Bet v 1 was among the first allergen-encoding cDNAs isolated and has significant sequence homology to a group of pathogenesis-related plant proteins and has been classified as a PR-10 protein.
