Description

Complement total hemolytic CH50 testing is used to monitor Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patients' response to therapy. It is also used to evaluate complement component deficiency, complement activity in patients with immune complexes , glomerulonephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cryoglobulinemia. Complement is a system of 25 proteins associated with cell membranes and present in plasma; it plays a vital role in the function of the immune system. Complement components function in the "classical" and "alternative" pathways. The CH50 assay mainly evaluates the classical pathway. Complement proteins are activated during the acute phase of inflammation or infection. Decreased levels of complement components occur during hypercatabolism, expenditure in immune complexes or due to hereditary deficiency. Decreasing complement levels may signal upcoming clinical problems, especially lupus nephritis. Source: Regenstrief Institute
