Version 2.77

Description

These are two chemically unrelated compounds from the streptogramin family that act synergistically. Used to treat vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE) due to E. faecium (NOT E. faecalis), and methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA). The Quinupristin / Dalfopristin combination inhibits protein synthesis by interfering with different targets on the rRNA 23S in the 50S ribosomal subunit. The synergy appears to be based on ribosomal conformational changes triggered by the binding of the streptogramin A (Dalfopristin), which can cause irreversible attachment of the streptogramin B (Quinupristin) to the ribosome.
