Description
JC (John Cunningham) virus is a neurotropic polyomavirus and infects up to 65% of all children by the age of 14. The virus causes no disease unless a patient's immune system is weakened or destroyed, such as in AIDS patients, or in patients who take drugs to prevent rejection of a transplanted organ. In those patients, JC virus can cause progressive multifocal leukoenchephalopathy (PML), a fatal brain disease due to an infection of the brain and spinal cord. The JC virus is also the main cause of nephropathy among kidney transplant patients on immunosuppressive therapy. The JC virus should not be confused with Jamestown Canyon virus, which is sometimes abbreviated the same way, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
