Description

The corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation test is used to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and help diagnose adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH or corticotropin) dependent Cushing's disease. CRH stimulation cannot distinguish between Cushing's and pseudo-Cushing's. During the procedure, baseline ACTH measurements are followed by administration of 1 ug/kg of CRH, after which ACTH is measured again at timed intervals. In patients with Cushing's, ACTH concentrations at 15 and 30 minutes post CRH administration should be at least 35% higher than the mean baseline value.
