Version 2.78

Description

The nucleosome is the structural unit of chromatin and consists of a segment of dsDNA coiled around a histone core. Anti-chromatin autoantibodies, such as those found in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) fall in to two categories: those directed against individual components of chromatin, such as DNA and histone, and those directed against the intact nucleosome. Traditionally anti-dsDNA antibodies have been among the ones used for diagnosis and monitoring of SLE, however, studies have shown that for some patients, the nucleosome is the primary antigen in SLE, and anti-nucleosome antibodies may provide a better reflection of disease activity. A subset of patients who are positive for anti-nucleosome antibodies but negative for anti-dsDNA antibodies may have a milder course of SLE that does not involve the kidneys.
