Description
The Bacillus subtilis group consists of gram positive, spore-forming, aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that are commonly found in the soil and comprises a number of species including B. subtilis subsp. subtilis, B. licheniformis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. atrophaeus, B. mojavensis, B. vallismortis, B. subtilis subsp. spizizenii and B. sonorensis. While members of the B. subtilis group are commonly thought of as a culture contaminant, they have been implicated in bacteremia, endocarditis and other infections, especially in immunocompromised patients [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK7699/].
