Description
Bone density scanning (Also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) or bone densitometry) is a procedure used to measure bone loss. DXA is the standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD), or the amount of bone matter per square centimeter of bone. It is a non-invasive procedure involving minimal radiation exposure. While measurements are typically made over the lumbar spine or proximal hip; the femur, radius/ulna, or calcaneus (heel) may be measured. Results may be reported as: 1) Measured density reported in either g/cm2 (grams per centimeters squared) or mg/cm2 (milligrams per centimeters squared), 2) T-score, the number of standard deviations above or below the mean for a healthy young adult of the same gender as the patient, and with peak bone mass, and 3) Z-score, the number of standard deviations above or below the mean for the patient's age and gender (race and weight may optionally be included). The most common reason for measuring bone density is to screen for and/or diagnose osteoporosis.
