Description
Retinyl palmitate (RP) is an ester of retinol and palmitic acid. RP is stored in hepatic stellate cells as lipid droplets in their cytoplasm. The stored RP comprises 80% of vitamin A in the whole body . Vitamin A is important for normal vision, the immune system, and it helps the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs work properly. It can be found in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends a daily intake of 5,000 international units (IUs) for everyone over four years old. Vitamin A can be supplemented orally in the form of vitamin pills or by injection. Vitamin A testing helps diagnose vitamin A deficiency in patients reporting night blindness, dry eyes, skin and hair, skin thickening, or greyish spots on the eye, or with anemia or diseases impairing nutritional absorption such as Celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome or Crohns disease. Vitamin A deficiencies are rare in the US. Testing may also be used to detect toxic overdose of vitamin A in patients reporting symptoms including headache, nausea, blurred vision, fatigue, dizziness, joint or muscle pain, hair loss and inflammation of the tongue.[Lab Tests Online:vitamin-a/tab/test] PMID: 17368315 PMID: 23625372 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
