Human coronavirus

Description
Coronaviruses (CoVs) are enveloped, non-segmented positive-sense RNA viruses that cause a range of respiratory infections in humans from mild respiratory symptoms to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Typically the virus is allowed to run its course and explicit identification of the virus is not needed. When identifying the virus is necessary for specific clinical cases or epidemiological studies, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is used, though serologic assays may be needed in cases where RNA is hard to isolate, no longer present, and for epidemiological studies. Treatment is primarily supportive. PMID: 25720466 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
