Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, is semisynthetic and derived from lincomycin by 7(S)-chloro-substitution of the 7(R)-hydroxyl group of lincomycin. It is marketed under various trade names, including Dalacin, Duac, BenzaClin, and Clindoxyl and Acanya (in combination with benzoyl peroxide), and Ziana (with tretinoin). Erythromycin (and other macrolides) can induce Clindamycin resistance in bacteria that are already resistant to erythromycin through well understood molecular mechanisms described in (Woods CR. Macrolide-Inducible Resistance to Clindamycin and the D-Test. Pediatr. Infect. Dis. J. 2009 December; 28(12): 1115-1118) related to the iMLSB genotype. Using a disc of erythromycin and one of Clindamycin this phenomena and the iMSLB genotype can be recognized by the D-shaped area of resistance. This means that the organism may become resistant to Clindamycin but not that it definitely would develop resistance. Source: Regenstrief Help
