Version 2.78

Description

Citrulline is a non-standard amino acid that can be incorporated into proteins only by modification of arginine during a variety of biologic processes including inflammation. Several citrullinated proteins have been demonstrated in the RA synovium. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease with a prevalence of 0.3 to 1% worldwide and leads to progressive joint erosion and disability if not treated early. Identifying citrullinated epitopes targets led to first and then second generation anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibody assays. These anti-CCP antibodies are important diagnostic and prognostic markers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as they: 1) may be more sensitive than RF (rheumatoid factor) in early and established disease, 2) may be a marker of erosive disease, and 3) may be found in healthy patients years prior to clinical onset, and 4) may predict development of undifferentiated arthritis into RA.
