Leprosy
Active
Description
Leprosy, described as early as the 5th century BC, is an ancient, though still active, chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The exact method of transmission has yet to be discovered, but nasal droplet infection is suspected. Leprosy predominantly involves the skin and peripheral nervous system. Forms of leprosy are varied, are largely dependent upon the host individual's immunity or susceptibility to M. leprae, and generally fall into three categories. Lepromatous leprosy is most common in those with impaired T-cell immunity, and tuberculoid leprosy in individuals with healthy immunity. Borderline (intermediate) leprosy accounts for the majority of cases and encompassess characteristics of both tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy. Diagnosis is made through clinical signs and microscopic evaluation of lymph fluid from skin lesions and nasal mucosa. PCR, serological and histopathological studies may also be employed depending on the suspected leprosy form. PMID: 28763601 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
