Anticomplementary activity
Active
Description
'Anticomplementary activity' (AA) can interfere with complement fixation tests because it results in the activation of complement in the absence of the antibody-antigen complex that is being tested for. Anticomplementary activity is usually caused by complement-activating factors in patient sera including immune complexes and contaminating substances such as endotoxin. Testing for AA is critical to exclude the possibility of such non-specific anticomplement activity (https://www.sciencedirect.com/referencework/9780122267659/encyclopedia-of-immunology).
