Osmotic fragility panel
Active
Description
Hemolytic anemia can be caused by red blood cell (RBC) membrane disorders such as hereditary spherocytosis, hereditary pyropoikilocytosis, hereditary elliptocytosis, and hereditary stomatocytosis. Alterations in the RBC membrane cause its shape to change from the typical torus, resulting in a lower surface area that makes the cell more fragile when placed in a hypotonic saline solution. This fragility becomes greater over time, as RBC membrane changes faster than normal. Osmotic fragility testing evaluates the extent of RBC membrane alteration. PMID: 24237975 Source: LOINC
