Version 2.78

Description

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a parvovirus that was first identified in 2005 and has been found in a variety of specimen types, including respiratory, stool, blood, and urine. It primarily causes respiratory symptoms in young children under the age of two. HBoV, like other paroviruses, is a small, icosahedral, non-enveloped DNA virus. Four subtypes of HBoV have been identified (HBoV 1-4), with subtypes 1-2 being the most common cause of illness. Subtype 1 is most often found in respiratory specimens, and types 2-4 in stool specimens. Transmission and infection typically occur in the winter and spring.
