Esterase stain.non-specific
Active
Description
Esterase stains are a class of stains used in diagnosing leukemias. There is non-specific esterase (NSE) and specific esterase (SE) stains. NSE staining methods use alpha-naphthyl acetate/alpha-naphthyl butyrate to identify cell types with esterase activity and are especially used in diagnosing acute monocytic leukemia (AML) types M4 and M5. SE staining methods use naphthol AS D-chloracetate (chloracetate esterase), which stains for granulocytes and mast cells but not monocytes or lymphocytes. The combination of NSE and SE stains are used in patients with acute leukemias to distinguish between 3 subgroups of acute nonlymphocytic leukemias: granulocytic leukemia, monocytic leukemia, and if containing both esterases, "true" myelomonocytic leukemia.
