Fondaparinux
Active
Description
Routine testing of Factor Xa inhibitor levels is not recommended because they have such a wide therapeutic index. Testing should only be done in special circumstances. Fondaparinux (brand name Arixtra) is a synthetic pentasaccharide with selective inhibition of activated factor X (Xa), used for prophylaxis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Measurement of fondaparinux anti-Xa activity is performed to monitor fondaparinux levels and potential adverse reactions (e.g. anticoagulant-associated severe bleeding). Fondaparinux is mainly excreted by the kidneys and has a half-life of 15 to 17 hours. Specimen samples are typically collected 3-4 hours after taking the drug. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
