Pinworm examination
Active
Description
Enterobiasis (pinworm infection) can be diagnosed by visualization of the worms in the perianal area or by using the transparent tape method, in which transparent tape is pressed to the perianal area, applied sticky side down to a slide, and then examined under the microscope for the presence of pinworm eggs. The tape collection should be done as soon as the person with suspected infection wakes up in the morning, before they stand up or do any washing. Specimens should be collected on 3 consecutive mornings, and then the slides should be taken to the healthcare provider for examination under a microscope.
