Version 2.77

Description

Nucleated cells are defined as any cell with a nucleus; the types of nucleated cells present depend on the specimen source. White blood cells are a common type of nucleated cell and can be further broken down into types of white blood cells (e.g., neutrophils, lympohcytes, eosinophils); mature red blood cells typically do not have a nucleus. One important application of the nucleated cell count and differential is in bone marrow analysis. Nucleated cells found in bone marrow include myeloid cells, which include blast cells, myelocytes, segmented neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes and plasma cells, and erythroid cells (erythroblasts, or immature red blood cells). The total number of nucleated cells (TNC) is important as well as the myeloid:erythroid ratio and both types of information can be used together to help differentiate between different disorders. PMID: 18822060 In addition, bone marrow transplants with a higher non-erythroid nucleated cell dose are associated with better outcomes for the transplant recipients.
