Description
Vitamin K antagonist therapy causes a decrease in the active forms of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X, with a concomitant increase in non-functional forms of these factors. These non-functional proteins are called "proteins induced by vitamin K absence/antagonism", or PIVKA, and can act as competetive inhibitors of thromboplastin, depending on the source. Human recombinant and bovine thromboplastins are sensitive to PIVKA, while rabbit thromboplastin is not. PMID: 24045543 Prothrombin time (PT) assays that use PIVKA-sensitive thromboplastin are considered to be more sensitive to factor II, VII and X deficiencies compared to standard PT assays.
