- Term was ambiguously named using an imprecise chemical name for one of the components. Formally, the chemical species name for 25-OH vitamin D3 is "calcidiol", which is correct. The second chemical species stated in the component name, "calciferol", does NOT convey the meaning of 25-OH vitamin D2. Rather the name "calciferol" conveys the parent vitamin D prohormone, not the intention of the test. LOINC 62292-8 conveys the meaning of the same test and is more clearly named. Therefore, the LOINC Committee recommends using this term instead. Additionally, 49543-2 has been replace by 62292-8 in panel term 49590-3, Calcidiol and Calciferol panel.

Part Description
LP64575-1 Calcidiol+Calciferol
Calcidiol+Calciferol is used to assess patients' vitamin D status, evaluate hypo and hypercalcemia and to investigate the causes of osteomalacia and rickets. Also useful in monitoring vitamin D replacement therapy. Vitamin D is the principal regulator of calcium homeostasis. It is particularly important in skeletal development and bone mineralization. Vitamin D is a prohormone because it has no hormone activity itself, but is converted to a molecule which does. The active form of vitamin D is 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D or 1,25(OH2)D (when D is used without a subscript it refers to either D2 or D3). The two forms of vitamin D used for nutritional supplementation are the secosterols ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).
