Oligoclonal bands are bands of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, and IgM) analyzed by protein electrophoresis or isoelectric focusing. Oligoclonal band assays most often focus on IgG bands which have the most prognostic value. PMID: 20663418 The presence of these proteins in CSF, but not in serum, indicates they are intrathecally synthesized and suggest inflammation of the central nervous system. Oligoclonal bands may be a sign of multiple sclerosis. A patient is considered positive for cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) oligoclonal bands if there are two or more bands in the CSF immunoglobulin region that are not present in the serum.
