Veterinary medicine:
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is among the smallest bacteria in nature and lacks a cell wall. It is prevalent in swine herds worldwide and causes nominal distress unless present with other bacteria and viruses. When infection with M hyoopneumoniae occurs in concert with the viruses porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) or porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), symptoms become severe and the duration of illness increases. M hyopneumoniae causes the destruction of cilia and epithelial death by attaching to the epithelial cilia of the lower airways. M hyopneumoniae eludes the immune system of the pig at the gene level by switching what proteins emerge on its cell surface. Culture is not recommended to identify M hyopneumoniae due to its slow and fastidious growth. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are available, but have low negative predictive values, which may be due in part to a reduced interaction of the immune system within the airways, where M hyopneumoniae colonizes. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) uses two primers to detect M hyopneumoniae and has increased the accuracy of detecting M hyopneumoniae. PMID: 15984347 Transmission of M hyopneumoniae is by direct contact with nasal secretion or inhalation of aerosols over short distances. There is an increased incidence of infection with M hyopneumoniae when the pigs are crowded closely together, there is poor air quality, there are fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and when other pathogens are present.[https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/mycoplasma-hyopneumoniae]
