Ragweed is a group of about 40 species which belong to the family Asteraceae. Ragweed is a pollen-producing weed which may induce hayfever, asthma and conjunctivitis in sensitized patients. Most ragweed species are native to North America with the most common being the Short(Common) Ragweed and Giant Ragweed. These two species are the main cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis in eastern and middle North America. Cross-reactivity across the various ragweed species occurs.

LP13928-4 Ambrosia elatior
Common (Short) ragweed is native to North America, but can also be found in Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe. It is a prime cause of allergy in the US, and now in Europe, in particular in the upper Rhône valley, the Balkan states and the Krasnodar district of the Russia.
Ragweed, and in particular Short ragweed (A. artemisiifolia), is clinically the most important source of seasonal aeroallergens, as it is responsible for both the majority of cases and the most severe cases of allergic rhinitis. Ragweed pollen also contributes significantly to exacerbation of asthma and allergic conjunctivitis. Ragweed pollen has also been implicated in eustachian tube dysfunction in patients with allergic rhinitis and contact dermatitis
