Ragweed is a group of about 40 species which belong to the family Asteraceae. Ragweed is a pollen-producing weed which may induce hayfever, asthma and conjunctivitis in sensitized patients. Most ragweed species are native to North America with the most common being the Short(Common) Ragweed and Giant Ragweed. These two species are the main cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis in eastern and middle North America. Cross-reactivity across the various ragweed species occurs.

LP14203-1 Ambrosia trifida
Giant ragweed is native to eastern North America, and to Colorado and Mexico. It is most abundant along the flood plains of south-eastern rivers. In the Mississippi Delta it can form vast stands. It can also be found in Japan and has colonised Europe.
Ragweed, and in particular Short ragweed (A. artemisiifolia), is clinically the most important source of seasonal aeroallergens, as it is responsible for both the majority of cases and the most severe cases of allergic rhinitis. Ragweed pollen also contributes significantly to exacerbation of asthma and allergic conjunctivitis. Ragweed pollen has also been implicated in eustachian tube dysfunction in patients with allergic rhinitis and in contact dermatitis.
