Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. Enteroviruses (family Picornaviridae, genus Enterovirus) are non-enveloped, positive-sense ssRNA viruses. EV-D68 is one of four serotypes, along with EV-D70, EV-D94 and EV-D-111, assigned to the human enterovirus D species. EV-D68 primarily causes respiratory illness, however, the full range of disease remains uncertain. [PMC:3542132] The virus is found in respiratory secretions and likely spreads person to person via coughing, sneezing, or surface contact. In the United States enterovirus infections are more common in the summer and fall. Although it was first isolated in California in 1962, EV-D68 was rarely reported in the U.S. until 2014, when the number of cases greatly increased. Infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to have symptomatic infections, which can vary from mild upper respiratory iillness to significant respiratory distress with complications requiring hospitalization and, in rare instances, death. Children with asthma are at higher risk for respiratory distress. Adults can get infected, but are more likely to have no symptoms or mild symptoms. There are no vaccines or specific anti-viral treatments for EV-D68, but patients should receive supportive care as appropriate. Source: Regenstrief LOINC, CDC
