LP14576-0   Stomatocytes
Stomatocytes are red blood cells (rbcs) with an oval or rectangular area of central pallor, looking like a "mouth" on a stained blood smear differential. The indentation on one side of the red cell is missing. Stomatocytes usually have altered permeability and increased cell volume. Stomatocytes tend to get trapped in the spleen and other organs, resulting in hemolysis. 40-60% of rbcs may be stomatocytes in patients with hereditary stomatocytosis. Increased numbers of stomatocytes are seen with liver disease, electrolyte imbalance, and hereditary stomatocytosis. Stomatocytes may also be seen as an artifact on a drying blood smear, but they should only be seen on some areas on the periphery of the blood smear.
