Part Descriptions
LP14843-4 Prototheca
Prototheca is an opportunistic pathogen that is a nonphotosynthetic chlorophyte (green alga) readily isolated in fungal culture. Human skin and bursal infections can be caused by at least two species of prototheca (Prototheca wickerhamii and Prototheca zopfii). Diseseminated infections occur in immunocompromised hosts. It also causes skin infections in dogs and mastistis in cows. It can be treated with the typical systemic antifungal drugs

LP6209-3 Culture
A culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). The presence of growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.
Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. [https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-microbiology/chapter/culturing-bacteria/]

- Change Reason
- The component for this term was erroneously named Protheca (a genus of beetles) instead of the intended term, Prototheca (a genus of algae). Since the term included a text definition that defined the term correctly as the algae and the initial version had a method of routine fungal culture (now its just culture) and since no one will be culturing beetles- there should be no confusion about this correction.
