CLSI (formerly NCCLS) document "Reference Leukocyte Differential Count (Proportional) and Evaluation of Instrumental Methods", 1992, recommend the use of variant lymphocytes rather than atypical or reactive lymphocytes.

Variant lymphocytes (also called reactive or atypical) are a type of abnormal lymphocyte found in the peripheral blood. They can be a marker for certain viral illnesses, including infectious mononucleosis, viral hepatitis, CMV, HIV, and rubella, and can also occur as part of a drug reaction to drugs such as phenytoin and para-aminosalicylic acid.
